Lincoln Center Theater – Vivian Beaumont

150 W. 65th Street, Lincoln Center (Upper West Side)
Opened 1965
~1,080–1,100 seats
Only Tony-eligible Broadway theater outside the Times Square Theater District

Overview

The Beaumont is unlike any other Broadway house: a three-quarter thrust stage designed by Eero Saarinen, surrounded by stadium-style seating arranged in a sweeping semicircle across two levels (Orchestra and Loge). No seat is more than 65 feet from the stage, so the usual worry — being too far away — is largely engineered out of the room. Instead, the seating decision here is about the horizontal arc: how far off-center you sit matters more than how far back. It's also the only Broadway venue not in Times Square, so the evening includes a walk across the Lincoln Center plaza and fountain, which is very much part of the experience.

History

Built for Lincoln Center Theater and completed in 1965 (opening with Danton's Death), the Beaumont was funded by a $3 million gift from philanthropist Vivian Beaumont Allen. A major 1981 renovation improved acoustics, sightlines, and accessibility. It remains operated by Lincoln Center Theater, one of America's leading not-for-profit theater companies.
