New Amsterdam Theatre

214 W. 42nd Street, Manhattan
Opened 1903; restored 1997 by Disney
~1,700–1,750 seats
Disney Theatrical Group's only Broadway theater

Overview

A landmark Art Nouveau interior wrapped in a Beaux-Arts facade, the New Amsterdam was the largest playhouse in New York when it opened in 1903. After decades of disrepair (and a stint as a movie house), Disney restored it to its original splendor in 1997 and has operated it exclusively ever since — it's currently home to Aladdin. The theater is unusually comfortable and modern for its age, with elevators to all levels (rare for a house this old) and no obstructed side views in Orchestra or Mezzanine.

Notable Shows

  • Aladdin (2014–present)
  • The Lion King (1997–2006, before transferring to the Minskoff)
  • Mary Poppins (2006–2013)
  • Historic home of the Ziegfeld Follies in the early 20th century

History

Opened in 1903 as the largest theater in New York, designed by Herts & Tallant in Beaux-Arts (exterior) and Art Nouveau (interior) styles. It fell into disrepair through the mid-20th century before the City and State of New York and Disney restored it under a 99-year lease, reopening in 1997 — it's now Disney Theatrical Group's flagship Broadway house.
