Overview

Originally the Alvin Theatre (its name a blend of builders Alex Aarons and Vinton Freedley's first names), this large Nederlander house was renamed in 1983 to honor playwright Neil Simon during the run of his own Brighton Beach Memoirs. It has an unusually flexible seating capacity — the auditorium was physically enlarged at one point for a specific production — and has hosted several of Broadway's longest-running musical hits.

Notable Shows

  • MJ the Musical (current)
  • Hairspray (2002–2009, 2,642 performances)
  • The Music Man (2000 revival)
  • Ethel Merman's Broadway debut, Girl Crazy (1930)

History

Opened in 1927 as the Alvin Theatre, designed by Herbert J. Krapp. It was renamed in 1983 for playwright Neil Simon, whose Brighton Beach Memoirs was then running. Both facade and auditorium interior are NYC landmarks.
