Majestic Theatre

~1,600–1,725 seats (one of Broadway's largest houses)
Owner: Shubert Organization

Overview

The Majestic is one of Broadway's biggest and grandest musical houses, built with a single large balcony (rather than two smaller ones) and a steeply raked orchestra that Herbert J. Krapp designed decades ahead of modern stadium seating. That rake means sightlines are excellent throughout an unusually large room, making it well-suited to big spectacle musicals with large casts, elaborate sets, and full orchestras. For 35 years it was the home of The Phantom of the Opera, and it now hosts large-scale musical productions that can fill its grand scale.

Notable Shows

  • The Phantom of the Opera (1988–2023, Broadway's longest-running show)
  • Gypsy (multiple productions, including current revival)
  • South Pacific (original 1949 production)
  • Carousel (original 1945 production)
  • Mack and Mabel (1974)

History

Opened in March 1927 as part of a three-theater complex built by the Chanin Brothers (with the Golden and what is now the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre), the Majestic was designed by Herbert J. Krapp in a Spanish-influenced style with Adam-style interior detailing. Ownership passed to the Shuberts in 1930. Its single-balcony, steeply-raked design was forward-thinking for its era and remains one of the most sightline-friendly large houses on Broadway.
