Overview

Renamed in 2022 to honor the legendary actor James Earl Jones — only the second Broadway theater named for a Black artist, after the August Wilson — this French Petit Trianon-inspired house recently completed a full renovation that finally made it ADA-compliant after over a century. It's the only surviving active Broadway theater designed by architect Thomas Lamb, and one of just a few located east of Broadway itself.

Notable Shows

  • Peg O' My Heart (1912, the theater's debut production, 603 performances)
  • The Magic Show (1974, 1,920 performances — the venue's longest run)
  • One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1963, early Kirk Douglas/Gene Wilder production)
  • The Heart of Rock and Roll; The Fear of 13 (recent tenants)

History

Opened in 1912 as the Cort Theatre, named for Seattle theater manager John Cort and designed by Thomas W. Lamb in a style inspired by the French Petit Trianon at Versailles. A 2021–2022 renovation modernized accessibility, and the theater was renamed in 2022 to honor James Earl Jones, who began his Broadway career in 1957.
