Golden Theatre

Opened 1927
~804 seats
Owner: Shubert Organization

Overview

The Golden is one of Broadway's smallest and most intimate houses, purpose-built for plays and dramas rather than large-scale musicals. Designed by Herbert J. Krapp in a Spanish-influenced style with spiral columns and arches, its compact footprint means there is genuinely no bad seat in the building — even the rear rows sit close enough to the stage to keep the performance feeling personal. It's the kind of room where a two-hander drama or a small-cast play lands with full force, and where customers who want to feel close to the actors (rather than see a spectacle) tend to leave thrilled.

History

Opened in 1927 as the Theatre Masque and renamed for producer John Golden in 1937, this Shubert-owned house holds a Broadway record: four Pulitzer Prize-winning plays premiered here within a single decade (the 1980s) — more than any other Broadway theater. Both its facade and interior were designated NYC landmarks in 1987.
