Broadway Theatre

1681 Broadway, Manhattan
Opened 1924 (originally a movie palace)
~1,763 seats
Owner: Shubert Organization — one of the few Broadway theaters physically on Broadway itself

Overview

Originally built as a movie palace with a stage large enough to accommodate a full orchestra for silent films (and, per Shubert's own account, even aircraft for spectacle numbers), the Broadway Theatre is one of Broadway's largest houses and one of the few actually located on Broadway the street. Its scale and technical capacity make it a favorite for large-scale musical spectacles.

Notable Shows

  • The Great Gatsby (current)
  • Cats (1997 revival run); Miss Saigon; West Side Story (past tenants)

History

Opened in 1924 as B.S. Moss's Colony, a movie theater designed by Eugene De Rosa, it transitioned to a legitimate Broadway house in 1930. Its modern facade dates to a 1990 office-building renovation, and it remains one of only a few Broadway theaters physically situated on Broadway itself.
